My 2 Go To Herbs for Fighting Inflammation & Pain

Living with Lupus can be challenging, but incorporating healing herbs into your daily routine can offer natural support for your health. Here are some powerful herbs that can help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being, along with important information about their interactions and research data on their effectiveness.

Anti-Inflammatory Herbs

Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Lately, I’ve been taking this herb every day—sometimes twice a day. Whether it’s in tea, a smoothie, or mixed into my overnight oats, turmeric has become one of my favorites. It has significantly reduced my fibroid pain and cramps, making it an excellent natural option for women seeking relief.

You guessed it—it’s turmeric, and its scientific name is Curcuma longa. When learning about herbs, it’s a best practice to familiarize yourself with the scientific (Latin) names. This ensures that when you’re discussing herbs with others, you’re referring to the exact same plant.

🌿 Why It Works:

Turmeric is renowned for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. It can help reduce joint pain and inflammation, which explains why I’ve noticed such a significant decrease in my symptoms. The active compound, curcumin, has been widely studied for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory benefits—making it particularly helpful for managing lupus symptoms.

✅ How I use it:

Whenever I use turmeric, I make sure to include black pepper. The black pepper enhances the body’s absorption of turmeric, making it more effective. I mostly use it as a tea which I drink about 2 - 3 times a day. But it can also be added to a smoothie in a soup.

⚠️ Warning:

If you are on blood thinner medication do not take this herbs because it can cause increase bleeding. As always please speak with your doctor.

If you are skeptical of the benefits of turmeric, there are studies that have shown the benefits of the curcumin in turmeric antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. In people with Lupus in has helped with joint pain.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

In a Caribbean household, certain herbs are staples—and ginger is one of them. Growing up, whenever I was sick, my mother would boil water with ginger and sometimes add garlic. I drank it without thinking about the benefits—I just knew it was the go-to remedy that would help me feel better.

Beyond being a childhood remedy, ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb. It can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, making it great for lupus-related symptoms. It’s also excellent for digestion and nausea relief, which is a double win for those with lupus-related digestive issues.

How I Use It:
Ginger is incredibly versatile—it can be used in cooking, teas, or smoothies. You can find fresh ginger in the produce section of most supermarkets. When making tea, I like to use about an inch of fresh ginger, flatten it with a pot to release its juices, and simmer it in water. Sometimes, I’ll slice it or simply toss it into a blender for my smoothies.

⚠️ Warning:
If you are on blood thinner medication do not take this herbs because it can cause increase bleeding. As always please speak with your doctor.
